Born to Run

Recently I finished the audiobook of “Born to Run” by Chris McDougal. This book had been recommended to me by several running friends so I purchased the Kindle eBook and audiobook prior to my trip to Jacksonville for 26.2 with Donna. I listened to about half the book to Jacksonville and back and then finished the remainder of the next several weeks.

So due to the book I have been intrigued by barefoot and minimalist running. I have tried on Vibram’s, Merrill’s, Altra’s and most recently Newton’s. I really didn’t want to spend a ton of money not knowing if I would enjoy the switch but I was committed to trying. I liked the Altra’s Instinct 1.5 and the Newton’s Sir Issac Newton the most, but still would like to get a pair of Vibram’s KMDs at some point.

I purchased the Sir Issac Newton’s for my first transition and am currently taking it slowly in making the transition. Any tips or advice is appreciated?

At the end of Born to Run the author spoke about just getting out and enjoying the run which pain or injury. Not that I have been injured recently but the way he spoke of the love and joy of running was inspiring. I so want to get there.

I’m Half Crazy

I started running half and full marathons 3 years ago. My first full marathon (WDW 2011) was a disaster because my running partner and I were both injured a month and a half before the marathon. Afterwards I tried to train for marathon #2 the next year, but realized very quickly that it was too big an endeavor to accomplish on my own without support. This past year I trained with the Pensacola Galloway Training group and completed full marathon #2 (26.2 with Donna) and beat my previous full marathon time by nearly an hour.

Currently, I am running long runs off any where from 6-12 miles on Saturdays with two short runs (3 miles) during the week. Why half crazy? I think the half marathon distance (13.1 miles) is the perfect distance for me and my personality. The half marathon still provides a challenge while not feeling like I killed myself by the end unless of course I am really pushing it.

My current philosophy is learning to just enjoy the run for the run and the people I run with rather than trying to compete (only against myself of course).

Well that’s me in a nutshell right now. Would love to connect and engage with other runners.

Bests!
